A long article in the Guardian this week, about companies that advise businesses on what type of background music to play. These companies create custom playlists to suit the particular style, mood or ambience that a business wants to create or the goal they want to achieve. The theory is that some types of music will encourage employees to work harder, while others will encourage customers to spend more money. The article talks a lot about creating a "special atmosphere" or a "holistic experience".

Nowhere does the article discuss the advantages of having no music at all, although it did include a quote from Nigel Rodgers (founder of Pipedown, to which Quiet Scotland is affiliated). Regarding piped music in shops, Nigel says, "You’re not going for a special sort of atmosphere, you’re just going to do your shopping.”

The article then goes on to say, "One of Pipedown’s boldest claims is that there is 'no genuine evidence' that background music increases sales. Opinions vary on this question, although most experts do not share Pipedown’s hardline position."

"I’ve spent a very large part of my life trying to persuade people to listen carefully to music so that it becomes an integral, civilising feature of their lives. The research into its commercial usage shows it being downgraded to an environmental level that many find pleasant, but others of us regard as intrusive and debilitating"
